Artscape’s Creative Placemaking Workshop will investigate strategies to connect and leverage the creative and cultural resources of communities in generating quality of place and supporting local economic development. Participants learn how to nurture and sustain the conditions for culture and creativity to thrive in downtowns, cultural districts, neighbourhoods and mainstreets and explore the potential of the arts and culture as a key tool in revitalization and creative city-building. Participants learn practical planning tools for undertaking creative placemaking initiatives in a range of different contexts. Topics include strategic planning, governance and cross-sector partnerships and community engagement.

Pre-workshop Event - Reimagining Windsor: A Walking Tour

Centered around downtown Windsor, the walk will provide opportunities for discussion and after-hours entry into vacant municipal spaces, storefronts, and the city's existing culture and heritage buildings.  Guided by Tom Lucier and Justin Langlois, participants will be encouraged to begin imaging the transformative potential of activating these underused spaces.

The walk will commence at 5:00 p.m. (location tbd) on Tuesday, November 30, 2010.  The walk will end at the Phog Lounge, 157 University Avenue West, Windsor, ON N9A 5P4 for a networking event.

9:15 a.m.         An Introduction to Creative Placemaking

Tim Jones, President & CEO, Artscape

Creative placemaking requires ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking and a collaborative approach to development. Cultivating the conditions that allow creative places to flourish relies heavily on engaged politicians and community leaders that support leadership and emerging cultural policies and legislation.  This session focuses on models of governance and partnerships that build capacity and momentum within a community, while harnessing the power of the arts to revitalize buildings, neighbourhoods and cities.  With over 20 years experience,  Artscape’s innovative practice of developing multi-tenant facilities for the creative and cultural sector will be explored.

The conversation will explore the role of community engagement in the evolution of the Artscape Wychwood Barns – a 60,000 sq. ft. multifaceted community centre where arts and culture, environmental leadership, heritage preservation, urban agriculture and affordable housing come together.  Tim Jones and Roscoe Handford will discuss how the vision for the Barns developed and the process of building community support for the project.

11:00 a.m.       From Good to Great:  Using Mixed Use Development to Revitalize a City  Center

Rob Spanier, Vice President, Live Work Learn Play
Learn about mixed use development and its use as an effective model being used across North America to bring places back to life.  Rob Spanier will present recent experiences with mixed use development and how the projects are incorporating many diverse uses to help create a real sense of place.
  LiveWorkLearnPlay is a cutting edge international urban development advisory firm dedicated to creating and redeveloping iconic mixed-use real estate projects and environments.

12:00 p.m.       Local Spotlight The House: Recently opened to the public, The House is a new initiative in downtown Windsor. Located within a former Inn, The House provides space for creative and cultural groups and aims to be a centre for collaboration. The House includes local retail, web and graphic services and meeting and event space. Learn how The House is making a significant contribution to the vitality of this city.

1:00 p.m.         Leading a Cultural Renaissance in Providence

Umberto “Bert” Crenca, Artistic Director

This year, AS220, a non-profit community space, celebrates its 25th year at the core of Providence's vibrant art scene. Founder Bert Crenca will share the Providence story and how AS220 been a part of this city’s transformation.  AS220 has grown from a small grassroots organization occupying a single rented room to a nationally recognized art and cultural institution with three mixed-use buildings in the city's downtown.  AS220 builds new audiences and infrastructure for artists, providing support through affordable learning opportunities, employment opportunities, access to equipment and facilities, and low rent live and work studios.

2:00 p.m.         A Conversation with Artscape & AS220

Two of North America’s leading practitioners in cultural space development, AS220 and Artscape will recount their experiences introducing artists and cultural workers as creative placemakers in their communities.  They will respond to questions centered on their experiences with the definition of a creative place and how creative placemaking has jumpstarted investment in their communities.

2:30 p.m.         A Windsor Response to Creative Placemaking

                        Justin Langlois, Broken City Lab

Broken City Lab is an artist-led interdisciplinary creative research group based in Windsor that tactically disrupts and engages the city, its communities, and its infrastructures.  Justin will reflect on creative placemaking and its potential contribution to reimagining Windsor.

In small groups, participants will rotate through thematically-based interactive sessions led by specific teams of faculty members. These intimate sessions will allow participants to bring project-specific challenges to faculty and peers for discussion.

Bursaries

The City of Windsor will be offering two bursaries for students attending the University of Windsor and St. Clair College of Applied Arts and Technology.  Interested applicants are asked to contact the Arts Council Windsor & Region (email: info@acwr.net) for more information on the bursary process.
